For Dr Margaret Johnston, returning to Shetland was about more than coming home. It was about raising a family in a place she loves and embracing a way of life she knew she couldn't find anywhere else. Read her story on shetland.org, via the link in our bio.

On Thursday, @shetland_arts kicked off Shetland Noir 2026 with some of the biggest names in crime fiction. We asked long time Shetland-visitor Ann Cleeves what keeps her coming back and first time visitors Louise Penny and Lee Child what they’ve thought of Shetland so far.
In the latest film in our series with TV presenter Kate Humble in Shetland, she visits North Yell to discover how a strong sense of community, creativity and enterprise is helping shape the future of one of Shetland's North Isles' communities. The film explores how North Yell's entrepreneurial spirit is supported by the North Yell Development Council, whose community-owned wind farm generates income that is reinvested locally. From housing and business infrastructure to opportunities for young people, the council helps turn ideas into action and creates the conditions for the community to thrive. Small in size but big in ambition, North Yell is a place where people are investing in their future while staying deeply connected to the community around them.
