Filmmakers Diletta Pasini and Leonardo Filippini came to Shetland curious about life at the edge of the UK, and keen to hear the stories of people who live and work here. Their journey took them to the island of Noss – one of Shetland’s National Nature Reserves and a place of extraordinary natural importance. The island of Noss is home to internationally significant populations of breeding seabirds. Perhaps best known for the Gannet colonies nesting on the towering cliffs of Da Noup, the summer months also bring Guillemots, Puffins, and Fulmars. There’s a good chance of spotting marine mammals too, including otters, seals, and porpoises. As well as welcoming wildlife, Noss offers a unique opportunity to work as a ranger, with two people employed each summer to live on the island and monitor its flora and fauna. Are you heading to Shetland Noir this June? 📚 With a programme packed full of author talks, workshops, panels and special events, there’s plenty to dive into but don’t forget to step outside the pages and explore the islands themselves. We caught up with crime writer Ann Cleeves to hear her top recommendations for making the most of your time here.
It’s the final Up Helly Aa of the season! This year’s Delting Jarl, Paul Ratter, tells us about his squad suits and how recycling was incorporated. Over 100,000 ring pulls have been collected from near and far and hand-linked into detailed breastplates. Recycled materials and hand-made items feature throughout the suit, showing the creativity and effort that goes into every element. Three cheers for the Guizer Jarl!🔥
Although a Scottish icon, Highland cows are a relatively rare sight in Shetland, where you’re far more likely to spot an otter or a Shetland pony! What is your most memorable nature experience in Shetland? 📸: @shetland.through.an.iphone88

Captured from above, Stanydale Temple stands as one of Shetland’s most intriguing prehistoric sites - a reminder that people have been shaping life on these islands for thousands of years. It’s just one of many remarkable places where Shetland’s past still speaks through the landscape.
