Whether you're visiting for a long weekend or an extended holiday, it pays to pack practically when planning a trip to Shetland.

We can’t guarantee what the weather will be like on a winter visit to Shetland, so it’s best to prepare for all eventualities. It might be blowing a hoolie (gale) and snowing one minute and then crisp, bright and sunny the next. One thing is for certain, comfort and warmth definitely triumph over glamour. Think waterproof jackets and sturdy walking boots for getting oot and aboot, and wear plenty of layers so that you can peel off once you get cosy indoors with a dram.

Clothes to pack

  • Wind and waterproof insulated jacket
  • Woolly jumper or fleece
  • Base layer/thermal underwear
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Hat
  • Scarf
  • Gloves
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Warm socks

Shetland’s night scene is pretty informal and there aren’t any dress codes at our restaurants or pubs, but you might want to pack something a bit smarter if you’re planning a night out.

What else to pack

  • Phone and charger
  • A day rucksack
  • Map - if you’re going hiking we recommend you take a physical map of the islands with you as the phone signal can be patchy in places so you can’t always rely on Google maps.
  • First aid kit - always handy if you’re out walking, particularly if you get blisters
  • Camera - Shetland is stunning and you’ll want to photograph it
  • Water bottle - essential for staying hydrated while hiking

If you forget to pack something you need, then there’s no need to worry. Commercial Street in Lerwick is our main shopping street, packed with stores that sell everything from outdoor wear and cameras to cosy woolly jumpers and tasty local produce. There are supermarkets and pharmacies for practical stuff too, and well-stocked local shops dotted throughout the isles should you need to pick anything up.
