Mid Yell is in a deep voe, sheltered by the uninhabited island of Hascosay. It has a 90m pier and a small boat marina, which has room for one large or two small visiting boats.

When approaching the marina keep towards the middle of the voe to clear the shallow sandbank off Gardiestaing. Make your entry from north of the marina entrance, keeping close to the breakwater, risk of damage is low as the bottom is sandy.

You can usually find a berth at the pier but it can occasionally be used round the clock by fish farms, so the marina or anchoring might be the better option.

Mid Yell is a great base for exploring the east coast of Yell with landmarks like the 'White Wife', a figurehead that was salvaged from the 1924 wreck of the German training ship Bohus, which can be found at Otterswick. There is an anchorage and sandy beach at Gossabrough a little further south.

Mid Yell is also a great staging point for further cruising north to Unst to see Muckle Flugga's lighthouse and the seabirds at Hermaness. The neighbouring island of Fetlar, known for its rich birdlife including red-necked phalaropes and the seal nurseries of the Blue Banks, is only a short sail away.

Mid Yell holds a fishing competition in the second week of August, a regatta in the third weekend of June and an agricultural show in East Yell on the first Saturday of September.
