This section of the National Cycle Network will usefully connect the south of Mainland with West Mainland. Scalloway is a much smaller town than Lerwick and this option effectively misses out Shetland’s capital.

The National Cycle Network splits in two at a major junction 3 miles (5km) before reaching Lerwick. You can either follow the B9073 west towards Scalloway, which is this route, or choose the alternative which goes into the heart of Lerwick.

The B9073 cuts through the ridge of hills that form the ‘spine’ of Mainland and crosses wild moorland to connect with the A970 once again. Suddenly the views of Scalloway come to the fore from the viewpoint on the hillside; a really wonderful panorama of picturesque Scalloway, its ruined castle and the many islands which lie to the south and west of the town.
