Discover Northmavine, the northernmost part of Shetland’s Mainland, in the first of a new four-part film series from Promote Shetland with TV presenter Kate Humble.
In this episode, Kate meets the team from Polycrub – a remarkable Shetland success story that has grown from a local innovation into an international business, exporting its iconic hardy growing structures to places including the Falkland Islands, Greenland, France, Belgium and Switzerland.
Designed and built in Shetland by people who understand island weather, Polycrub’s polytunnel-style structures are made to withstand some of the toughest conditions while helping people grow almost anything.
But Polycrub is more than a business success story. As Managing Director Maree Hay explains, Polycrub is a community enterprise, with profits reinvested back into Northmavine through the Northmavine Community Enterprise Company, supporting local jobs, strengthening vital infrastructure and helping sustain the future of this rural community.
Kate also meets Carly Sutherland, who shares what life is really like living and working in Northmavine: a place that feels remote yet deeply connected, families feel safe and children enjoy a rare sense of independence.
What makes people choose to build a life in one of the most remote parts of the UK? Watch to find out.
