Life in Shetland with Kate Humble: North Yell

In the latest film in our series with TV presenter Kate Humble in Shetland, she visits North Yell to discover how a strong sense of community, creativity and enterprise is helping shape the future of one of Shetland's North Isles' communities.

Kate meets Alice Jamieson, Director of the North Yell Development Council and a local health visitor, who returned home after a career in the Royal Navy to raise her family. She shares why community life in Yell is so special, and how local people work together to create opportunities for future generations.

Kate also visits the Shetland Gallery, where owner Shona Skinner showcases work by Shetland-based artists and others inspired by the islands' unique light, landscapes and seascapes. She meets internationally renowned artist Peter Davis, who moved to Shetland more than 30 years ago and continues to draw inspiration from the power of the sea.

The film explores how North Yell's entrepreneurial spirit is supported by the North Yell Development Council, whose community-owned wind farm generates income that is reinvested locally. From housing and business infrastructure to opportunities for young people, the council helps turn ideas into action and creates the conditions for the community to thrive.

Small in size but big in ambition, North Yell is a place where people are investing in their future while staying deeply connected to the community around them.
