Life in Shetland with Kate Humble: Hoswick

What makes creative people choose to build their businesses in a tiny village in Shetland?

In the second episode of this four-part series from Promote Shetland, TV presenter Kate Humble visits Hoswick, a small village in Shetland’s South Mainland that has become an unexpected hub for creativity, craftsmanship and independent business.

Kate begins at Nielanell, where she explores the world of contemporary Shetland knitwear. Textile designer Niela Nell Kalra, who moved to Shetland and established her business in 2008, has built an internationally recognised knitwear brand inspired by the islands’ rich textile heritage, creative community and the landscapes around her – alongside influences from much further afield.

Kate speaks to Katie Leask, who shares why Shetland knitwear remains so prized for its quality, craftsmanship and longevity. She then visits jewellery designer Karlin Anderson, who explains why she chose to leave London to return home to Shetland and grow her business here.

With nature on the doorstep, space to expand and a supportive local network, Hoswick offered the chance to build something bigger, including creating jobs and bringing family into the business.

From contemporary jewellery to world-class knitwear, Hoswick has grown into a creative community where makers support one another, visitors are warmly welcomed, and independent businesses thrive. Can creative businesses thrive far from the city?

In Shetland, the answer is yes.
