Life in Shetland: the salesman triathlete

Andrew Aitken is a man who truly embraces island living. Born and raised in Shetland, Andrew has spent most of his life surrounded by its wild landscapes and strong community.

By day, he works as a fish salesman with LHD, and in his spare time, he’s a dedicated triathlete. Sport has always been part of his life, with a family deeply rooted in Shetland’s thriving sporting scene.

For Andrew, training isn’t just about competition; it’s about balance. Whether swimming along Shetland’s rugged coastline, cycling its quiet, well-surfaced roads, or running through open landscapes, he finds space to reset and recharge.

“Training gives me time for myself,” he says. “It’s a switch off from work and a busy family life. I do my head and body a massive favour by keeping active.”

Shetland offers a unique environment for those drawn to sport and the outdoors. With hundreds of miles of quiet roads, access to open water and breathtaking scenery at every turn, it’s an ideal place for triathlon training. And when winter arrives, the islands continue to support an active lifestyle, with excellent leisure centres offering swimming pools, gyms, and indoor training facilities.

Discover how Shetland isn’t just a place to visit, it’s a place to live well, stay active and find your own rhythm.
