Shetland’s community and economy needs a wide range of skills, so wide indeed that we couldn’t hope to list all of them here. However, the major sectors include food (including agriculture and fisheries), administration, education, health, construction, professional services, tourism, retailing, the oil sector, transport and various branches of the creative industries. The craft sector, including textiles and particularly knitwear, is small but nonetheless vital. Opportunities arise from time to time in journalism, broadcasting, architecture, town planning, sports and recreation or arts management, to give just a few examples.
One option you might consider is to keep your present job - wherever that may be - but live in and work from Shetland. Some people have already done this successfully and, with excellent communications, it may be feasible for you.
