  • Views sought on proposed 'Shetland Way' walking route
By Promote ShetlandMarch 21st 2022

A new 80-mile walking route called the Shetland Way that would stretch from Sumburgh Head to Hermaness in Unst is being proposed. VisitScotland is gathering views on the idea ...

Shetland is a paradise for walkers, with almost 1,700 miles of spectacular coastline, beautiful inland lochs, incredible geology and world-class archaeology to explore.

Walking is perhaps the best way of appreciating Shetland’s extraordinary landscapes, and the incredible wildflowers, mammals and birds that thrive among them.

It’s no surprise that walking remains a popular pastime for locals and visitors alike. With so many wide-open spaces it’s easy to rediscover your sense of freedom while exploring Shetland by foot.

Now plans are being developed which could truly put the islands on the map as a walking destination.

VisitScotland has commissioned a study to explore the prospect of developing a long-distance walking route known as ‘The Shetland Way’ stretching from the southernmost tip of Shetland’s Mainland to the most northerly island of Unst.

The route would cover approximately 80 miles and run through up the ‘spine’ of the islands linking Shetland’s natural, cultural and community assets, opening them up to walkers and potentially cyclists too.

VisitScotland’s Shetland Development Manager Steve Mathieson believes a long-distance walking route would be an exciting addition to the islands’ attractions, providing more opportunities for visitors and residents to explore the islands.

The initial proposal is to begin the Shetland Way at Sumburgh Head before it winds its way north to Hermaness in Unst.

Not only will the route guide people through areas of great natural beauty but it will also tap into Shetland’s designation as a UNESCO-accredited global geopark and lead to places of cultural and natural heritage.

VisitScotland is gathering views on the proposal, and you can have your say by answering an online survey. Alternatively, if you would prefer to complete the survey by phone or would like a paper version, contact 0131 297 7019 or ShetlandWay@stantec.com

The survey is being conducted by Stantec UK Ltd on behalf of VisitScotland, aiming to gather views, insights and suggestions of residents and previous and potential visitors to Shetland.

Plan your next wonderful walk in Shetland.
