By Promote ShetlandJuly 13th 2023

Check out Promote Shetland’s Spotify playlist to get in the mood for this summer’s biggest event, Tall Ships Lerwick. The playlist includes tracks by some of Shetland's best known bands, as well from the visiting headliners.

In typical Shetland fashion, music will be a major part of the Tall Ships Lerwick celebrations this July.

Headliners Tidelines, Peat & Diesel and Queen II will be joined by the likes of beloved Orcadian party favourites, The Chair, and the Edinburgh-based Saltire Street Band. Local acts Rack ‘n’ Ruin and Just Another Cake Fridge will showcase their unique talents, painting a vivid musical tapestry.

The Friday lineup boasts the much-loved Shetland covers band, First Foot Soldiers. The band are excited to be part of the weekend’s events, saying “We are really looking forward to our slot on the Friday evening. At the last Tall Ships (in 2011) we played on Sunday afternoon in the bitter driving rain to a small but dedicated audience in their raincoats and umbrellas. This time around we are playing our biggest-ever gig and we can't wait to be on the big stage - we just hope t-shirts and shorts will be more appropriate!” They added that “Folk should be advised to wear comfortable footwear as we will definitely have them dancing for the duration of our set!”

Big Time Quell, Husfu, and the Queen of Harps will join the musical extravaganza, further amplifying the sonic delight.

While the Tall Ships Races will be one of the bigger events of the year, it’s one of the many opportunities musicians have in Shetland to play their music live and develop their talents. The Folk Festival, June’s Bopapalooza event, almost weekly gigs in various venues and the recording studio in Mareel all offer

Finally, on the eve of the festivities' culmination, Queen II shall ascend the stage, delivering a grand finale worthy of remembrance.

Sharing the limelight are the powerful rockers, Ten Tonne Dozer, Shetland's very own Fleetwood Mac tribute act, The Chain, the spirited Tennessee Wannabes, and the Donald Anderson Band.

But the revelry doesn't end with the final encore. Late-night enthusiasts can continue the celebration, as Mareel transforms into a vibrant DJ venue.

Wednesday night's revelers can dance to their heart's content until 1:00 am, while Thursday to Saturday extends the sonic indulgence until 3:00 am.

The bill proudly showcases local talents that will leave an indelible mark on the festival. The Roadside Crows, a captivating band formed by the visionary Gina Paolo Ritch, draws comparisons to the likes of Tom Waits and the Violent Femmes. Their presence amplifies the diversity and richness of the musical tapestry that Shetland offers.

Shetland is always proud to support Shetland acts, with many local bands playing over the Tall Ships event, varying from singer-song writer acts such as Adam Guest Band to metal bands like Brae based Quantanna.
