  • Roll, stroll and explore - discover Shetland's outdoors
By Promote ShetlandMay 7th 2026

There’s no better way to experience Shetland than by getting outside and exploring. Whether you prefer leisurely coastal walks, challenging hill climbs, or scenic cycles between communities, Shetland offers endless opportunities to enjoy the islands’ landscapes, wildlife and fresh air.

Walking through Shetland’s landscapes

From dramatic cliffs and sweeping beaches to quiet voe-side paths and heather-covered hills, Shetland’s walking routes showcase the variety of the islands’ scenery.

Shetland’s network of core paths makes it easy to explore on foot. These routes connect communities, coastlines and countryside areas across the islands, helping walkers experience both well-known locations and quieter corners of Shetland. Many routes are suitable for relaxed strolls, while others offer longer adventures for experienced walkers.

Walking here is rarely just about the route itself. Along the way, you may spot seabirds wheeling over cliffs, seals hauled out along the shore, or even otters exploring the coastline. In summer, wildflowers brighten the roadside verges and moorland, while the long daylight hours make evening walks especially memorable. On a calm evening, there are so many spectacular places to explore that it makes it a wonderful time of year to enjoy Shetland's rugged beauty.

Some walkers enjoy exploring around Shetland’s vibrant communities too. A route into a village or harbour can easily include a stop at a local shop, bakery or café to pick up supplies for a picnic or simply enjoy a break before continuing.

This spring, the active travel challenge organised by Love to Ride is encouraging people everywhere to get moving through its Roll & Stroll campaign. While the challenge itself takes place during May, the spirit behind it is something Shetlanders and visitors can enjoy all year round: travelling actively, discovering new places, and enjoying the outdoors.

Cycling quiet roads with unforgettable views

Cycling in Shetland offers a different pace from busier destinations. The islands’ roads are superbly well-maintained and generally quiet, making them ideal for everything from gentle family rides to ambitious day-long tours.

Many cyclists choose routes that wind around the coastline, where every hill reveals another view across the sea. Others prefer exploring inland roads through rolling moorland and farmland. The changing light and weather mean no two rides are ever quite the same.

Since the Viking Energy Wind Farm became operational, its owner, SSE, has formally opened the tracks between some of the turbines, making an excellent new way to explore Shetland's moorlands on two wheels.

Cycling also provides a fantastic way to connect different communities. You can spend a day moving between villages, beaches and historic sites, stopping whenever a view, wildlife sighting or local shop catches your attention.

For those looking for a more relaxed outing, shorter circular rides offer plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors without needing fancy bikes or experience. You can even rent bikes and e-bikes, if you're visiting Shetland on holiday or to visit family.

Explore at your own pace

One of the joys of exploring Shetland outdoors is that activities can be shaped around your own interests and abilities. Some visitors enjoy energetic hikes and long-distance cycles, while others simply enjoy gentle strolls along the shore or a quiet ride between neighbouring communities.

The key is slowing down enough to appreciate what’s around you: the sound of seabirds overhead, the scent of the breeze, and the constantly changing views across land and sea.

Respecting the landscape

Shetland’s landscapes are beautiful, but many are working environments as well as places to enjoy recreation. Farming and crofting are part of everyday life in the islands, and it is important to respect the countryside to protect all animals, both agricultural and wild.

When exploring outdoors, it’s important to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and respect the countryside, wildlife and local communities.

That means:

  • leaving gates as you find them
  • keeping dogs under control, especially around livestock and wildlife
  • taking litter home with you
  • avoiding disturbing nesting birds and other wildlife
  • parking considerately and keeping access clear

By exploring responsibly, everyone can help protect Shetland’s unique environment for future visitors and residents alike.

Sometimes the most memorable adventures come from a short walk along the coast, a cycle to a nearby community, or an afternoon spent exploring somewhere new at your own pace.
