For a lot of people, the first question about moving anywhere isn't about jobs or schools — it's about the dog. So here's the short answer: Shetland is a genuinely good place to own a pet.
Space is the obvious thing. Open moorland, coastal paths and quiet roads mean a dog gets a different quality of life here than in most of mainland Britain. The landscape is almost entirely accessible. And because so many people here have animals, it's simply woven into daily life in a way it isn't in most places.
That said, livestock roam freely across large parts of Shetland. Sheep are everywhere, including on unfenced ground that looks like open hillside. Dogs must be kept on a lead wherever livestock are present. This is both a legal requirement and genuinely important in a farming community. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code is the definitive guide.
There are also several dog-friendly beaches across the islands, and no dog bans on any beaches in Shetland. However, as a dog owner, it is your responsibilty to keep your dog under control at all times and to pick up and safely dispose of any litter.
