Here's a quick rundown of what's on in June. Apologies - there's not enough space to fit everything in as it's such a busy month, but this will give you a flavour of what's on offer. Keep a lookout in local media to find up to date listings.
If you're interested in textiles, I would recommend a visit to the Gadderie at the Shetland Museum to see the Taatit Rugs: the Pile Bedcovers of Shetland. The exhibition is the culmination of 2 years research into these remarkable bedcovers. You should also head to the Bod of Gremista for the exhibition "Elements" which shows work by 3rd year Shetland college students.
Out in Weisdale, the Bonhoga Gallery has an exhibition by Fraser Taylor entitled ‘Shadowed Valley‘. It's inspired by historical stories of evictions in Weisdale and runs from Saturday 6th June until Sunday 19th July 2015. The gallery has extended its opening hours and is now open on Monday and to the later time of 7.30pm on Thursday.
For bird enthusiasts the RSPB is conducting guided walks of Mousa every Monday afternoon until 10th August 2015 - to get there you have to take the Mousa ferry from Sandsayre pier. The RSPB are also offering a guided walks around the Funzie Nature Reserve in Fetlar. And of course, the Sumburgh Visitor Centre is a must for bird enthusiasts, as is a trip round Noss.
Music lovers can set their feet tapping at the Jaws Festival, which is on from 5th to 14th June. With the emphasis firmly on jazz and world sounds, it's sure to delight. There's concerts at venues throughout the isles, featuring a mix of local and visiting artists such as Eddi Reader - but keep an eye on the Jaws website for news updates. There's also the regular "Shetland Showcase", held each Monday night through the summer at Islesburgh Community Centre. The Showcase offers visitors the opportunity to see local musicians and buy crafts and textiles.
If you looking for something in the northern isles, there's fun for all the family in Yell at Burravoe's Big Weekend, which is on 12th to 14th June. Back in town, and Lerwick will be a riot of colour and entertainment as the mid-summer carnival takes place on the 20th. Lerwick Harbour will also be a hive of activity as the Bergen to Shetland yachts will be in port from 25th to 28th June. While you enjoy looking at the visiting yachts, you can take time out to sample some local delicacies at the Shetland Food Producers market, which is at Harrison Square on Saturday 27th June.
