The leading politician and businessman who helped drive the “Glasgow's Miles Better” campaign in the 1980s is to give a talk in Shetland next month.

Michael Kelly will also meet senior figures in the public and private sectors in the isles.

The aim of his visit, organised by Veronica Rocks of Busta House Hotel, is to help increase confidence in the local economy and improve the isles" self-image.

Dr Kelly, a former director of Celtic Football Club, will be in Shetland between the 13th and 15th of February and make a presentation at the Shetland Museum and Archives on the 14th.

Mrs Rocks said: “Michael Kelly was instrumental in helping Glasgow through tough times in the 1980s, and I'm delighted that he has agreed to come to Shetland to share his knowledge and expertise with us.”

Dr Kelly said: “I will be telling people of my experience in devising and launching the Glasgow's Miles Better campaign and my experience of other cities with which I have been involved from Leeds to Luton to Lublin in Pland, and from Bradford to Edinburgh.

“All the problems have been different. Many of the solutions have been the same.”
