  • Deckhand course offers new route into fishing
By Promote ShetlandApril 15th 2026

A new training course at UHI Shetland is offering young people an opportunity to take their first steps into the fishing industry.

The five-day Deckhand Preparation Course has been developed as an introduction to working at sea and forms part of the wider Youth Opportunity Programme (YOP), led by the Shetland Fishermen’s Trust. The programme aims to support training and recruitment within the local whitefish fleet.

For some participants, the course may lead directly into work. Following the June intake, at least four candidates are expected to move into placements on local fishing vessels, beginning in July. These placements mark the start of a structured two-year pathway, including a probationary period, a guaranteed income and ongoing support.

Boosting the local fleet

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to encourage more young people to consider careers in fishing, while helping to maintain skills and employment within Shetland.

Sheila Keith, Director of the Shetland Fishermen’s Trust, said the programme represents a long-term investment in the sector. “By linking UHI Shetland’s new deckhand preparation course with guaranteed placements onboard local vessels, we are creating a clear and supported route from school to sea,” she said.

“This initiative strengthens our fleet, supports our young people and helps ensure that the benefits of fishing remain rooted in our islands for generations to come.”

The course is open to those aged 16 and over. Applicants are required to complete a medical and be accepted by Seafish before taking part.

Anyone interested in the course can contact UHI Shetland for further information.
