Carbon Reduction Shetland and the Shetland Community Bike project are to launch the first of their free cycling scavenger hunts on Fathers day, this Sunday. T
he hunt, which will take place in Bressay, marks the start of a month of Sunday scavenger hunts, with the other hunts taking place in Walls, Mid Yell and Dunrossness.
All scavenger hunts are free and will start at 2pm, with registration open from 1.30pm at the following locations:
19th June - Bressay Ferry Terminal, Bressay
26th June - WallsHall
3rd July - Mid Yell Leisure Centre
10th July - Ness Boating Club
The hunts have been designed by the Shetland Community Bike Project. Caroline Adamson, Project Manager at the bike project, said: “The scavenger hunts are designed to highlight cycle routes in these areas, and how easy it is to cycle to the local amenities, such as shops, halls, schools and ferries. As cycles travel on the ferries for free, we hope to see a number of Lerwick residents coming over to Bressay with their bikes to join in the first scavenger hunt.”
Taking part in the scavenger hunts is easy, simply take your bike along and register between 1.30 and 2pm at the above locations to receive clues and safety vests. Then get on your bike and follow the clues to discover more about the local area. There will be treats to pick up along the way, as well as goodies and certificates for completing the hunt. Although there will be marshals around the course to keep you on track, children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult.
Harriet Bolt, Carbon Reduction Officer at the Shetland Amenity Trust, said: “We hope the scavenger hunts will appeal to all ages. With the first hunt taking place on Father's day, we also hope to see lots of families taking part in a fun day out.”
