By Promote ShetlandMay 5th 2021

As visitors and islanders get out and about across Shetland, we’ve had a few enquiries asking which campsites are open for business and the facilities available. Here’s a quick round-up…

Gardiesfauld Hostel, Caravan and Campsite
Uyeasound, Unst, Shetland ZE2 9DW

Beachside pitches are available to visitors hoping to explore the UK’s most northerly isle, including the Hermaness National Nature Reserve. The site is open to motorhome and caravan hook-ups and tents and must be booked in advance. The toilet block is currently being refurbished but due to reopen soon. The hostel will reopen on 1st June but for exclusive use only. For more information and to book, email enquiries@gardiesfauld.shetland.co.uk, or call 01957 755279.

Burravoe Pier Trust Caravan and Campsite
Burravoe, Yell, Shetland ZE2 9AY

Yell is a great place for coastal walking and rewards those interested in history, archaeology, arts and crafts. The Burravoe site lies just above a marina and offers eight fully serviced caravan bays as well as space for tents. The site is open for business and no booking is required. All pitches come with electric hook-up and are offered on a first come, first served basis. For more information, call 01957 722315 or 01957 722355.

Fetlar Hall Campervan and Caravan Site

Newly open for 2021, this new site for campervans and caravans is next to the Fetlar Hall. You can park for £15 per night, and facilities include a fully accessible toilet and shower, plus clothes washing facilities and toilet waste disposal. Note, this is a vehicle only campsite and there are no grass pitches for tents. To book, call 07375341242.

Braewick Café and Caravan Park
Braewick, Eshaness, Shetland ZE2 9RS

The site at Braewick is a great base for adventures to Eshaness, Uyea, Fethaland and Ronas Hill, and there are superb sea views to the sea stacks known as the Drongs. The site is open this year for self-campervans and motorhomes. The toilet facilities are open for guests staying on-site and at the Wigwams. For more information and booking availability, visit the website.

Skeld Caravan Park and Campsite
Harbour View, Westerskeld, Skeld, Shetland ZE2 9NL

This is a great campsite for exploring the Westside of Shetland, including Sand, Westerwick, Culswick and Reawick. The site is currently open to caravans and motorhomes with self-contained facilities, but not for tents as the toilet block and facilities are closed. To book, call 01595 860287, and for more information, visit the website.

Delting Boating Club Caravan Park
Hillswick Road, Brae, Shetland ZE2 9QG

The district of Delting is a bustling gateway to Northmavine and the town of Brae has a supermarket and places to eat. The site is open for business but the toilet and shower block remain closed, so you need to have self-contained facilities. See the club's Facebook page for more information and booking details.

South Nesting Caravan Park
South Nesting, Shetland ZE2 9PP

This is a quiet campsite in the Central Mainland of Shetland, making it an ideal base from which to explore the rest of the islands. The site is reopening for the summer, with eight hook-up points for caravans and motorhomes. There are showers and toilet facilities available on-site. Find out more on the website.

Bridgend Outdoor Centre and Caravan Park
Bridge End, Burra, Shetland ZE2 9LE

East and West Burra offer outstanding scenery and two beautiful beaches at Meal in the north and Minn in the south. Bridgend is a picturesque and convenient place to explore Shetland’s Central Mainland. The Outdoor Centre and caravan park are open for the 2021 season. There are four pitches for caravans and motorhomes with electricity and water hook-ups. The pitches are offered on a first come, first served basis. Cunningsburgh Touring Park
Greenmow, Cunningsburgh, Shetland ZE2 9HG

Cunningsburgh Touring Park, in the South Mainland, sits snugly alongside a small quiet marina, on the sheltered east shore of Aithsvoe. It is open for caravans and motorhomes, but please note that the amenities building remains closed. Fees are £20 per night, including electric hook-up. For booking enquiries, email enquiries@ctp.holiday or call 07470899605. For more information, visit the website.

Levenwick Campsite
Levenwick, Shetland ZE2 9HZ

Situated in the South Mainland, Levenwick is an ideal spot to base yourself for exploration of Mousa Broch, St Ninian’s Isle and Sumburgh Head. The campsite overlooks the white sands of Levenwick Bay. The campsite is open but with a reduced capacity. Toilets and shower facilities are available. Please note that booking is essential, and campers without a prior booking will not be accommodated. Visit the website for booking information.

Wild Camping

Away from these licensed caravan and camping sites, wild camping in a tent (but not in a vehicle) is legal on most unenclosed land, provided you follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. When close to a settlement, it’s courteous to enquire at the nearest house. If you want to use facilities on an official site, you should offer payment. The Shetland Islands Council also ask that you please wild camp for no more than 2-3 nights in one location and avoid fields with crops, livestock or nesting bird colonies.

Camping Bods

Shetland has a range of camping bods (former fishermen’s storage buildings) dotted around the islands, which are run by Shetland Amenity Trust. All of the bods are currently still closed but plans are afoot to reopen some of them in June/July. Please refer to the Camping Bod website for the latest updates.
