Move to Shetland

Case Study: Ruth Brownlee

Ruth Brownlee is an artist whose paintings have been widely exhibited in Britain and overseas and have found their way into private collections in the UK, Norway, Switzerland, France, USA, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Her work is also in the Shetland Museum’s collection and the prestigious Fleming Wyfold Collection, London.

My first visit to Shetland was in July 1998. First impressions were of the amazing light, space, beautiful beaches and friendly folk. In December 1998, I moved to Shetland to live with my partner and concentrate on my painting.

I feel very well accepted in the local community. The things that appeal to me are the friendliness of people here, the stress-free environment, the weather, the beautiful scenery, the open spaces and Shetland’s rich culture and heritage.

The disadvantages, for me, are the costs of travelling to and from Shetland, high fuel costs and not being able to visit family, friends and galleries & museums on the mainland when I want to.

Shetland provides constant inspiration for my painting. With technology and internet access, I can do business with galleries and customers world-wide. It’s a beautiful place to live.
