Baltasound is a large and well-serviced harbour sheltered by the isle of Balta at the mouth of the sound and by the high ground to the north and west.

Local services
  • Toilets and showers available at Unst Boating Club.
  • Fuel available Monday to Friday from Sandisons Ltd at the top of the pier.
  • For repairs, contact Unst Inshore Services, +44 (0)1957 711881.

The small boat marina is not suitable for visiting yachts. However yachts can find a secure berth inside the arm of the main pier, fender boards are recommended. Alternatively, there is a good anchorage south west of the pier.

During the summer, the harbour hosts various events, including a regatta and fishing competitions, and there are music evenings in the hall.

On the north east coast of Unst the bays/inlets Wick of Skaw, Norwick and Haroldswick offer temporary shelter for vesels. Haroldswick is home to the Unst Boat Haven, Shetland's only museum dedicated to the islands maritime history of the 19th and 20th centuries. Also well worth a visit is the fascinating Unst Heritage Centre, where the permanent displays include geology, genealogy and the island's famous fine lace knitting and spinning. Both centres are open daily, Monday to Saturday 11am - 4pm and Sunday 2pm - 4pm, May to September.

In mid July, Unst hosts the award winning Unstfest, which offers a wide range of activities and entertainment for all ages.
