You may well have heard of Shetland ponies and you might have seen one of the many television programmes that feature our very special wildlife. If these were the only distinctive things we had, we’d still count ourselves very lucky; but of course there’s a great deal more. On these pages, we introduce you to our environment, our history, our culture and our people. You can find out about our astonishingly energetic musical scene and the interesting work being done by Shetland artists and designers. We explain some of the many ways in which Shetlanders earn a living. Here, too, there’s an insight into leisure in Shetland. We have excellent sports facilities and many outdoor opportunities such as walking and sailing.
We also clear up the muddle about where Shetland is. Faced with maps that place us in boxes off Aberdeen, Cape Wrath or even Ireland, it’s no wonder that people get confused.
If you’re considering Shetland as a place to settle, we hope these pages will help paint a clearer picture of what you can expect.
