The Spring 2017 issue of 60North is available now!

Welcome to the spring edition of 60North! When Misa asked me if I would like to be the guest editor of this magazine I jumped at the chance. There is always great excitement in the Promote Shetland office when the new issue arrives, and it’s a piece of work we’re all very proud of, so I was delighted to be handed the editorial baton for this edition.

Shetland in spring and summer is a very special place, at this time of year I can think of nowhere else I’d rather be. The days are lengthening rapidly as we approach the simmer dim (summer twilight) and from as early as mid-May we’ll be aware of that overnight glow, as the light never completely disappears from the northern sky.

There are many signs of the changing seasons – for crofters and farmers, the focus over the next few weeks will be on lambing; we can see boats being towed to the nearest marina ready for launch, gardens are beginning to come to life and our community-run Sunday teas have returned, with delicious homebakes to look forward to.

A few highlights from this issue include a feature on 2016’s unprecedented whale watching season – we’ve already had many sightings of orcas over the past couple of weeks so we have high hopes for this year too.

There’s a great article from Dr Carol Christiansen, she describes how international couture house Alexander McQueen has paid fitting tribute to Shetland knitwear history in its recent collections.

We also have a feature on Jimmy Moncrieff, General Manager of the Shetland Amenity Trust and a crucial figure in Shetland life and culture, who sadly passed away in February this year.

I hope you enjoy this issue.
