Welcome to the autumn edition of 60 North! It’s hard to believe that 2016 is almost over. We’ve had another busy year here at Promote Shetland and this issue is a testament to that.
In June we launched our new 60 North multimedia digital marketing platform to promote Shetland as a place to live and work. We decided to kick things off at midsummer, with a 12-hour marathon of radio broadcasting taking in almost the full length of Shetland. In August we took the Beatcroft live show hosted by Tom Morton, in a new direction and started streaming it via Facebook Live.
2016 has been a phenomenal year for the Shetland textile industry as well – from our trip to Vogue Knitting Live in New York in January, the Crofthoose Hat pattern launch at Edinburgh Yarn Festival in March, to the biggest and busiest Shetland Wool Week yet. Almost 600 participants indulged in over 160 wool-related workshops, drop-in sessions, talks, demonstrations, studio visits and our famous Sunday teas. This year we also included the whole of Shetland with events taking place from Unst to Fair Isle. And we supported Mona McAlpine’s wonderful From Shetland With Love charity, which helps children who are physically disabled, HIV positive and are left orphaned or abandoned in Lesotho.
Shetland food and drink also saw another successful year with many new and exciting businesses starting up. The launch of the newly formed Shetland Food and Drink Association chaired by Marian Armitage, award-winning food author and a great ambassador has also been very positive for the isles. The Shetland food and drink industry generates millions of pounds for Shetland's economy and employs thousands of people.
