Shetlanders, much like most people in Britain, aren't known for their overt displays of affection, but that doesn't mean they're not romantics at heart!

Here's some inspiration for things to do to show the people you love how much you care this Valentine's...

Indulge in some pampering

Shetland is spoilt for leisure centres, many of which have steam rooms, saunas and whirlpools, as well as swimming pools. Why not go for a dip in the pool and enjoy some spa time afterwards? See the Shetland Recreational Trust website for opening times and facilities.

Celebrate Shetland-style

Valentine's Day falls on a Monday this year, so why not celebrate it on Sunday instead? Shetlanders love a good Sunday run (also known as a drive in the countryside!), so take your loved one for a drive around the isles to see the sights. While you're at it, stop off and pick up a sweet treat from one of the isles' honesty boxes. We hear that Rachael's is doing special luxury Valentine's cookies this year!

Cosy up at the cinema

Nothing says date night quite like a trip to the 'pictures' or cinema, as we now call it. Mareel is back open and has a roster of good films screening, although you'll have to wait until Friday 18th to see the latest romcom releases, Marry Me and Never Too Late. Visit the website for the latest listings.

Rustle up a romantic cocktail

If you're staying at home, why not try something different from the usual beer and wine and rustle up some romantic cocktails? Osla Jamwal-Fraser shared a couple of Taste of Shetland favourites in her Valentine's blog from last year.

Stroll on Da Street

We all live such increasingly busy lives that sometimes it can be difficult to slow down and enjoy what's on our doorstep. If you've got a couple of spare hours on Monday 14th, why not pop down to Da Street with your other half and have a browse in the local shops and a cup of tea at one of the many lovely cafes.

If you're in the mood for treating your other half, there are lots of lovely gift ideas to be found in shops like Ninian, The Peerie Shop and Aurora, to name just a few. Or why not treat them to a box of handmade chocolates from Island Larder?

Hike and hug

The weather in Shetland is nothing if not unpredictable but that shouldn't stop you from getting outdoors. There are so many beautiful walks to do in Shetland for all levels of fitness and ability. So, why not get together with your Valentine for a bracing walk before cosying up inside by the fire with a hot chocolate or perhaps something stronger! For walking inspiration, check out our pick of winter walks.
