Sumburgh Head Lighthouse Visitor Centre is taking part in the national "Big Draw" event on Saturday 18th October,in partnership with Shetland Arts.  The Visitor Centre facilities will be open from 10.00am to 4.00pm for keen artists to come along and get involved in this collaborative drawing project. The event is open to all levels of artist - from enthusiastic beginners to skilled sketchers of all ages.

The 2014 Big Draw will run from 1 October to 2 November across the UK and in twenty other countries, with 280,000 people expected to join in over 1000+ events. The Big Draw offers thousands of enjoyable drawing activities which connect people of all ages with museums, outdoor spaces, artists, designers, illustrators - and each other. These events are for those who love to draw, as well as for those who think they can't!

This year's Big Draw theme; It's our world, is a celebration of our environment - of urban, rural and coastal landscapes.  Sumburgh Head is therefore a perfect setting for a drawing event.  Participants will be able to draw inside and outside the Visitor Centre buildings, including the fascinating engine room which powers the fog horn, the Marine Life Centre displays and the Radar Hut - along with the stunning coastal landscape all around.

The drop-in event will include drawing activities for all ages and abilities. For those who are less confident in their drawing ability, there is a trail of brass rubbing symbols around the Nature Reserve, which can be collected and compiled into a collage or design, or simply added to the worksheet which can be downloaded at www.sumburghhead.com/activities or picked up from the event entrance in the Gift Shop.

In the Education Room, textile artist Jen Deschenes, will lead the construction of a giant collaborative drawing, which everyone will be encouraged to contribute to; the panoramic views from the windows out to Fair Isle, Foula and even Noss are bound to inspire some creative drawing. Drawing materials will be available and all contributions are welcome.

Born in Shetland and raised in Whalsay, Jen draws on Shetland traditions in her own artwork and her current exhibition "Common Thread" will be at the Bonhoga gallery in Shetland until 26th October. (Opening Times: 10.30 - 4.30 Tues-Sat and Sun 12 - 4.30) Shetland Amenity Trust are pleased to be working with Shetland Arts and Jen in this Big Draw event at Sumburgh Head Lighthouse Visitor Centre.

Admission to the Big Draw event will be £4.00 for adults, £2.00 for children. (under 5's free.)
